The American crocodille is conidred an endangered species in nearly all parts of its north,central and south american range.Survey data,exept in the united states,is pooror nonexstent,but conser vationits agree that illegal hunting and habitat depletion has redued populations of this wide-ranging reptille to critical leavls.A samall remment popultion lives in southen Florida,but most are found in southern Mexico,certral America the carribben,and northen southren America. Their habbit of chioce is the fresh or brackish water of river estuaris,costal lagoonsand and mangrove swamps..A prenistoric-looking creature,it is distingish from its cousin,the American ailligator,by its longer,thinner snout,its lighter coior,and two long teeth on the lower jaw that are visble when its mouth is closed.This species is among the lagest of the word"s crocodilles with certral and south American males reaching leghts of up to 20 feet (6.17meters) males in u.s. popultion rarely execed 13 feet (4meters), hower.Their diet conisis maniy of small mammals,brids,fish,crabs,insets,snalls,frogs,and occasionally carrion.They have been know to attack people.but are far more likely to flee at the sight of humanan most countreis in American crocodilles ranges have passed protection,but unfotuntey ,few govermments povdive adquate efocements.
